A Community & Family – Reteti Elephant Sanctuary
These elephants don’t know anywhere else as home. All of them have a story. Orphaning of elephants happens for many reasons. Some are abandoned at birth because they are born premature. Others are severely sick or injured when they are very young, hence being abandoned. And there are those that are too weak to walk especially in the drought season and cannot keep up with the herd. Others fall into the hand dug wells and the herd doesn’t come back for them. And sadly, some of

How An Elephant Is Seen…And Protected
Then one day in school, we are taken on a surprise trip to the game reserve. We get to see the elephant. We are in awe! We are totally amazed at how gentle this animal is. It’s still amazingly big. Actually, bigger than anyone has described. While on this trip, we are taught about the elephants. Elephants, too, get nervous just like humans. They get angry when provoked, they get frustrated when they are hungry and chased from the farms that were once their migratory paths. An

African Adventures – Part I.
What does a new place feel like? What are the smells, the
sounds, the tastes and the sights? It seems hard to imagine and pictures don’t
always do a place justice, but there is a magic that comes on each time we step
off the plane and into an unfamiliar world. Africa has always seemed like a foreign, colorful place filled with heat, sunshine, and possibility spread spanning to the horizon. Truth is, there’s really no place like it that I’ve ever been to. Upon landing in Kenya

Mount Kenya Is Burning!
Mount Kenya is burning. Elephant Cooperation’s partner, Mount Kenya Trust, is battling wildfires that are burning moorlands and making its way to the forest where the elephants reside. We know that wildfires are not biased, they can happen anywhere in the world. They are unpredictable and when we feel that we have made progress, the wind changes and the fires spread another way, decimating life with every touch. Please help us raise money for the elephants, community
and chil

Help Care for Baby Fungulani
GRI – Wildlife Rescue recently responded to an orphan elephant alert in the small village of Fungulani, Feira. Two fisherman, Emmanuel and Mbewe, noticed the young elephant alone in a thicket, as they made their way home from their gardens. The men restrained the calf gently with some soft ropes, and observed her from a distance for 5 hours, hoping to witness the herd return for her. When no other elephants came, Emmanuel and Mbewe called GRI, who communicated the sighting to

ANNOUNCEMENT: First Well of 2017 equals more water for elephants!
We are excited to announce that Elephant Cooperation initiatied its first borehole of 2017! This is our second attempt at drilling, and we are ecstatic to announce that we have successfully hit water! Because of YOUR support and our partners at Wildlife Works, this borehole is made possible. Now, more animals (including elephants) will have access to water during the drought! Why is this borehole important? In 2016, Kenya had poor rains leading to a major drought. It was so s

3…2…1… Lift Off!
Elephants are on their way towards extinction. Over the last several decades, the population of African elephants has steeply declined from millions to roughly 350,000. In 1976, there were around 316,000 elephants in Tanzania alone. By 2014, roughly 43,000 were left. There continues to be a 30% decline year over year of elephants in Africa. Their slow breeding process is not enough to keep up with the horrific and unethical ivory trade industry. If we don’t do something about
