Mount Kenya Is Burning!

Updated: Jun 19, 2021

Mount Kenya is burning. Elephant Cooperation’s partner, Mount Kenya Trust, is battling wildfires that are burning moorlands and making its way to the forest where the elephants reside. We know that wildfires are not biased, they can happen anywhere in the world. They are unpredictable and when we feel that we have made progress, the wind changes and the fires spread another way, decimating life with every touch.

Please help us raise money for the elephants, community and children at risk.

For every $1 donated through our Facebook campaign, EC and one of our donors will match it with $2 up to $20,000. Click here to donate to our campaign.

With your help, we could send in excess of $30,000. This will have a huge and immediate impact on the firefighting efforts!

Per MKT’s Facebook page:

“Our vitally important water tower, providing ecosystem services to millions of people and businesses in Kenya, is currently being destroyed by fire.

Throughout the past five days, winds and extremely dry conditions have burnt hectares of moorlands and the fire is dangerously close to the forest. In some areas the forest is starting to catch – along with the bamboo regions. We are struggling to regain control. We are working with the Kenyan government and local partners around the clock, but resources and funding for the scale of the problem are scarce.

We desperately need more funding for helicopters hours – dropping people and dousing the area with water and planes for surveillance high up on the mountain. Hours and hours have been donated so far by our partners Tropic Air, the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and KFS. Progress is hard to say with winds changing direction throughout the day.

We need urgent financial support to cover the cost of fuel, rations and equipment. An hour running a helicopter costs £2,000 ($2,600 USD).”
